A rockpool at the bottom of Slieve Donard, Newcastle, Co. Down. Sketched en plein air as a small study and painted large back in the studio. After a day of hiking up Slieve Donard, I was struck by the beautiful clear water and the dappled light flickering through the trees — it resonated with me as a very special place. Did you hike Donard lately? For anyone who knows the Mournes, this is the quiet reward waiting where the trail ends — the clear rockpool water at the bottom of the mountain.
